What can I expect during a doctor's house call?
The doctor will do a full assessment and advise on the necessary investigations and treatment. If possible, the investigations and treatment will be initiated during the home visit itself.
What kind of tests can be done during a house call?
Basic investigations can be carried out at home. These include, but are not limited to, blood tests, urine tests, stool tests, COVID ART or PCR swabs, influenza swabs.
Scans (eg. x-ray) can also be ordered and scheduled urgently at a nearby facility.
What kind of treatments can be done during a house call?
We can start oral medications, injections, and even IV medications or IV fluids.
What is an IV?
An intravenous (IV) cannula is a thin, flexible tube that is inserted into a vein to deliver medications or fluids directly into the bloodstream.
IV medications allow for rapid absorption and onset of action. IV medications are commonly used when immediate response is required (eg. painkillers, anti-vomiting medications or emergency medications) or in severe infections when higher concentrations of antibiotics are needed.
IV fluids refer to solutions that are administered intravenously to maintain hydration. It is commonly used to treat dehydration in patients who have poor oral intake.
Will I be hooked up to an IV drip for the whole day?
During the home visit, your IV cannula will be connected to a bag of IV medications or IV fluids which will then be infused by your nurse or doctor. The duration of an IV drip can vary – it can range from a few minutes to an hour. Once the IV drip has been completed, the IV cannula will be disconnected and you will be able to move around your house freely. When your next IV drip is due, your nurse of doctor will do another home visit to administer the next dose of your treatment.
How best should I monitor myself at home when the doctor or nurse have left?
If you are worried about your condition or your loved one’s condition, and would like to continue basic monitoring after the doctor’s home visit – you can consider monitoring your vitals signs and recording it down. This includes measuring your body temperature, heart rate, blood pressure and oxygen saturation.
Your doctor use this information to detect changes in a patient’s condition, monitor treatment effectiveness, identify potential health concerns, and make informed medical decisions.
If you wish to do so, you will require a thermometer, blood pressure machine and an oximeter.

There is no need for the added stress and hassle of trying to find the necessary equipment when you are sick.
